Personally, I've found Copyscape to pretty much near useless. I've written a novel, which I've released under a CC licence and posted online in various places, but Copyscape failed to find any of these.

What's shocking is how easy it is to copy a person's work without it looking at all like the original.

Then there's the fact that a lot of the 'greatest' writers copied quite a bit. Shakespeare in particular. However, he'd basically rewrite the work so that it was better than before. Early sci-fi, for example, was often rewritten stories from mariners. Slowly it evolved into something more, but it just goes to show you don't need to be all that original to write a piece of literature.
